Job Description
The Finance Department is responsible for provision of wide-ranging financial services and advice for the Representative Body and other provincial bodies through:
Developing and maintaining an effective financial strategy
Co-ordinating and producing detailed financial forecasts, budgets, management accounts and statutory accounts
Day-to-day administration and control of all income and expenditure
Managing the investment portfolio
Managing the special trusts through the Common Investment Fund
The administration of salaries, stipends and pensions
Providing general financial advice for dioceses and parishes.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Financial Accountant to:
Assist with the management and financial accounting function of the organisation and to assist heads of departments and other officers with understanding and interpreting financial information.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
Professional Qualification – AAT, Part-qualified or fully qualified accountant or experience of working within a management accounts or financial accounting role for a minimum of three years.
Charity and Non-Profit Experience – Experience of working in a finance team within a charity, or not-for-profit organisation.
Financial Reporting and Compliance – Strong understanding of charity accounting standards (SORP), Charity Commission regulations, and HMRC tax rules (Gift Aid, VAT etc.)
Budgeting and Financial Management – Experience in preparing budgets, forecasts, and management accounts.
Fund Accounting – Knowledge of restricted, unrestricted and endowment fund accounting.
Audit and Internal Controls – Experience supporting audits and ensuring compliance with financial policies.
Skills and Competencies:
Financial Reporting and Analysis – Ability to prepare accurate management accounts and financial statements.
Reconciliation – Ability to fully reconcile balance sheet control accounts.
Regulatory Compliance – Knowledge of charity tax requirements, Gift Aid claims, and VAT rules for charities.
Accounting Software Proficiency – Experience using Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, Xledger or charity-specific financial systems.
Process Improvement – Ability to streamline financial operations and improve reporting efficiency.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Management – Ability to work with other departments, trustees, and external auditors.
Communication Skills – Ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial colleagues.
Automating – Knowledge of automating finance processes and digital transformation.

Salary: £39,904 – £45,148
Contract: Permanent
Reporting to: Financial Controller and Director of Finance
Hours of Work: Full Time (34.75 hrs/pw)
