Course Description: This course is an introduction to music psychology, a field concerned with the processes of music perception and production, responses to music, and the use of music in everyday life. Representative topics include: the role of music as a mediating stimulus for non:musical responses, physiological foundations of music perception and production, models of mood and emotion in music, the relationship between music and language, and models of music cognition. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to understand and critique basic science research and clinical research studies, design and implement an experimental research protocol, interpret research data, and articulate future scientific inquiries pertaining to applications of music in healthcare. Course requirements include weekly reading responses and a semester:long research project on a topic of the student's choosing. Thorough knowledge of music psychology and research methods, including applications to research and clinical work in music and health sciences. Demonstrated excellence teaching music topics at the university level.
